A pierdut o steluță doar pentru că a insistat atât de mult asupra războiului civil. Autorul cărții a mărturisit însă de la bun început care îi era intenția: să încerce să înțeleagă ce-a putut declanșa un conflict atât de lung și atât de crud ce-a lăsat în urmă zeci de mii de morți. Să priceapă cum de e posibil ca la un moment dat să-i cuprindă strechea pe vecinii ce trăiau în pace împreună și să-i determine să se omoare între ei fără nici un discernământ. Pentru a desluși misterul, a petrecut câteva luni bune în Sri Lanka și a scotocit prin toate ungherele interesante. Cartea a fost pentru mine o sursă bogată de informații despre țărișoara pe care urma s-o vizitez nu peste multă vreme și mi-a influențat deciziile legate de locurile spre care m-am îndreptat. Am aflat din ea multe informații legate de istorie veche și nouă a Sri Lankăi și ce complicate au fost lucrurile după ce englezii și-au făcut bagajele și s-au retras. Mi-a plăcut mult că autorul citează mereu din scrierile altor călători englezi ce-au avut norocul sau ghinionul să nimerească aici în timpuri demult apuse. M-a făcut curioasă să descopăr dacă nu există cumva și un corespondent român care să fi făcut la fel. Până acum n-am descoperit însă nici unul. Perhaps the wild elephants say more about the complexity of this island than anything else. It’s said they follow the same paths all their lives, and from generation to generation. These paths are everywhere, and are often unknown to human beings. This means that Sri Lanka is densely criss-crossed with invisible corridors that have remained unchanged for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years. Sometimes an alimankada, or elephant path, won’t be used for a while, and people will forget that it’s there. But once the elephants are back on their path, there’s little that will divert them. They’ll break through fences and pickets, and have been known to sweep aside huts and little houses. Zoologists are uncertain whether to describe this as obstinate or determined, and perhaps it doesn’t matter. All that’s clear is that, in the collective elephantine mind, there is a great plan of this island. Maybe the human mind works in the same way. Looking through Ceylonese or Sri Lankan history, it never feels quite circular. Rather, there are a recurring series of points of arrival and departure, with everything between lying disrupted and broken. Civilisations appear and flourish, and there’s a great surge of progess before it all suddenly vanishes. No one is quite back where they started, and yet the same story will begin again, perhaps somewhere else. It’s as if the island’s history is a dense mesh of lines and pathways which—like the alimankadas—simply have to be followed. The issues and the protagonists have barely changed in thousands of years, and always there’s that same sense of obstinacy and destination driving them along.
